Acrylic Chess Set
For my final design project in DIY, I made an all acrylic chess set. I started by looking at what aspects of the different chess pieces (rook, pawn, bishop, etc.) best define the respective piece. Since I was using acrylic I could essentially make the pieces to whatever design I desired, but I instead chose to keep it simple. I wanted to capture the essence of each piece with every design. I asked the question, what is the rook or knight in its most basic form. The profiles of each piece were then cut from a sheet of black and white acrylic. They were pieced together with acrylic glue and then bead blasted to give it a much nicer finish and texture. The latter part was important since people will be interacting and touching the pieces quite frequently. The board was made from a single sheet of a 1/4" thick 12" x 12" piece of grey acrylic that was bead blasted then rastor cut. The resulting set was very cheap to make and makes for a rather fun game of chess!
